How far is Jinja from Kampala?
Jinja is about 81 km east of Kampala, linked by the Kampala-Jinja Highway. We have not verified a standard journey time, and it changes with the day: weekend traffic can slow the road, so check on the day. Leave early, and ask your host for the time they usually allow for the journey.
If you arrive at Entebbe airport and head straight to Jinja, it is a long day, so many travellers sleep one night near the airport first. See Short Stay in Entebbe Near the Airport, or spend your first night in a Kampala estate.
Is Jinja good for a weekend stay?
Yes. Jinja is on the northern shore of Lake Victoria near the source of the Nile, and its attractions include white-water rafting, the Nile source and bungee jumping. The Bujagali Power Station, about 8 km north of the town, supplies 250 MW of hydroelectric power. Operators change their routes, so book activities directly with a licensed operator and confirm the details before you travel.
Across the river lies Njeru, in Buyikwe district. The Source of the Nile Bridge, which was commissioned on 17 October 2018, connects Njeru to Jinja. Njeru is also home to the Nile Breweries headquarters. If you plan to travel for an event, book early and read the host's cancellation policy carefully.
Njeru side or Jinja town?
| Base | Think about |
|---|---|
| Jinja town | Shops, restaurants and the river activities are nearer; usually easier for a car-free stay |
| Njeru side | Across the Nile; use the bridge to reach town; check how far the property is from the road |
| Out towards Bujagali | Close to the dam area and activity camps; plan transport for evenings |
Ask the host how long it takes to reach the activity point you booked and whether a driver is needed. We have not measured these distances ourselves, so we do not quote times.
Should a group book a whole house instead of a lodge?
For a group of friends or a family, a house usually gives more space and privacy than rooms at a lodge, plus a kitchen. The things to settle before you pay are the number of bedrooms and beds, the maximum number of guests the host allows, parking for more than one vehicle, and how the compound is secured at night.
- Maximum guest numbers are enforced, so everyone staying needs to be listed.
- Every guest must have ID and a selfie on file with the booking.
- Parties are not allowed, and neighbours can complain to us.
Hosts may ask for a refundable deposit of up to 20% of the booking or UGX 500,000, whichever is lower. Read the damage steps on How Short-Stay Booking and Payment Work Here.
When should I book, and what does it cost?
Weekends and public holidays are when most people take trips, so book ahead. We do not have verified seasonal data for Jinja, so we cannot say which months are busiest. Hosts set the nightly price, and as of our November 2026 data we had no live Jinja short-stay listings, so we do not quote a range. Search shows the full total for your dates.
Many bookings are same-day. Each host sets a latest booking time for tonight, so a last-minute Friday plan can work if the place is free. If the host has marked the days as already taken, the next free date appears on the listing.
Where can I read about buying or renting in Jinja long term?
If a weekend makes you want to stay longer, see Land and Property for Sale in Jinja City or houses and apartments for rent in Uganda. The overview for guests is on the short stays hub.
