Short Stays in Kampala: Which Area to Book

Updated 3 November 2026 · Land & Property editorial team

For a short stay in Kampala, pick Kololo for business and embassies, Bugolobi for a residential base with a mall nearby, Muyenga for hill views, Munyonyo for the lake and conferences, and Naguru or Ntinda for a north-east base near Kololo and the shops. The airport is about 40 km away, so the estate you choose changes your journey more than the nightly price does.

Which part of Kampala is best for a short stay?

It depends on why you are here. Kampala is spread over hills, and a few kilometres on the map can mean a long crawl in the evening. Use the table to match the estate to your purpose, then open the estate page for the detail.

How far is Entebbe airport from Kampala estates?

Entebbe International Airport is about 40 km by road from central Kampala. The Entebbe-Kampala Expressway starts at the airport and runs north to Busega, where it joins the Northern Bypass, and a spur leads to Munyonyo on the lake. That is why Munyonyo is the easiest estate to reach from the airport, while hill estates such as Muyenga and Kololo mean leaving the expressway and entering city traffic.

We cannot give a reliable journey time, because it depends on the hour, the day and your driver. Ask your host for their usual time at your arrival hour, and plan extra if you land at a peak time. If you only need a bed for the night around a flight, a stay in Entebbe may suit you better.

Do short-stay apartments have backup power and water?

Do not assume. Before you pay, ask the host in the booking chat these questions and keep the answers in the thread:

  • Is there a generator, inverter or solar backup, and does it run the fridge, lights and Wi-Fi router, or only lights?
  • Is there a water tank or borehole, and what happens if the mains is off for a day?
  • Which internet provider is used, and is there a backup connection for work calls?

Our policy treats an undisclosed power or water outage of more than 12 hours as grounds for a full refund claim, so a host who tells you the truth in advance protects you both. Details are on the cancellation and refunds page.

What about security, gates and parking?

Most apartment blocks in these estates are in gated compounds with a guard, but practice differs from one building to the next. Ask whether the gate is staffed at night, whether your driver can enter and turn, and whether parking is inside the compound. Indoor cameras are not allowed in any listing, and outdoor cameras must be disclosed on the listing page.

For safety, the exact address is hidden until you have paid. Before booking you see a shaded circle of about 500 metres. After payment you get the exact pin, directions, a gate photo and arrival notes, and you can share the location with a boda or taxi driver by WhatsApp. Read how this fits the rest of the flow on the booking and payment page.

Should I stay somewhere other than Kampala?

If your trip is mainly an airport connection, choose Entebbe. If you want the river and activities, go to Jinja for a weekend. For stays longer than a month, compare monthly options in houses and apartments for rent in Kampala by area, or browse all rentals in Uganda. Everything you book as a short stay starts from the short stays hub.

Frequently asked questions

Which part of Kampala is best for a short stay?

Kololo for business and embassy visits, Bugolobi for a calm residential base, Muyenga for hill views, Munyonyo for the lake and conferences. Choose by your purpose and your daily journey, not only by price.

How far is Entebbe airport from Kampala estates?

About 40 km by road from central Kampala. Munyonyo is reached by a spur of the expressway, so it is the simplest estate from the airport. Journey time depends heavily on traffic, so ask your host for their usual time at your arrival hour.

Do short-stay apartments have backup power?

Some do, some do not. Ask the host in the booking chat about generator, inverter or solar, whether it runs the Wi-Fi, and how water is stored. An undisclosed outage over 12 hours counts as a serious event under our policy.

Can I book a place for tonight in Kampala?

Often yes. Each host sets a latest booking time for tonight and how long they need to get the place ready, and search shows only places that can still be ready in time.
