What is Kololo like for a short stay?

Kololo sits in Kampala Central Division and has been an upscale residential area since the 1950s. In recent years hotels, banks and hospitals have moved in, so the quiet villa streets now share the hill with offices and restaurants. For a guest this means two things: you are close to where business gets done, and you should expect traffic at the start and end of the working day.

Neighbouring areas include Naguru, Bukoto, Mulago, Makerere, Nakasero and Kibuli. If you find Kololo too busy, Bugolobi is calmer, and the full comparison is on Short Stays in Kampala: Which Area to Book.

Which embassies and landmarks are near Kololo?

Kololo is Kampala's main diplomatic district. Missions listed for the area include those of Algeria, China, Egypt, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Russia, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia and South Africa, as well as the High Commission of Kenya. If you are visiting a visa office or an embassy event, staying within a short ride saves a lot of time, but check each mission's current address before you travel, because they move.

Other landmarks on or beside the hill are the Kampala Golf Course, the Uganda Museum, Kololo Airstrip, Centenary Park, and the MTN Sports Arena at Lugogo. Private hospitals in the area include Kampala Hospital and Kololo Hospital, which is reassuring if you travel with family or an older parent.

Is Kololo noisy at night?

It can be. Bars and restaurants have raised noise and traffic on the hill, and residents have gone to court over noise from several bars. A fair way to choose is to ask the host two questions in the booking chat: how far is the nearest bar or event venue, and which side of the building is the bedroom on. A back bedroom in a block set away from the main restaurant streets is usually quieter.

If you want evening dining within a short ride, Kololo is good. If you need to sleep early before a flight, consider Entebbe instead.

What types of places do hosts offer, and what do they cost?

Expect a mix of furnished apartments in gated blocks and a smaller number of whole houses. Because the area is walled and guarded, check that the gate is staffed at night and that your driver can park. Backup power and water storage are worth confirming before you pay.

We do not publish a nightly price band for Kololo. As of our November 2026 data we had no live short-stay listings in the area, and we will not guess. When listings go live, search shows one total for your dates, including cleaning, any extra-guest charge, the payment provider's fee and any government levy. The cleaning fee is capped, and you can read how we protect the price on the booking and payment page.

Can I stay in Kololo for a month?

Yes, but a nightly booking is rarely the cheapest way. For stays over a month, look at monthly options on Apartments for Rent in Kololo, Kampala or browse all rentals in Uganda. Hosts often agree a better rate for long stays, and a monthly tenancy gives you a contract. For a few nights, start from the short stays hub.

How do I get my exact address?

For your safety and the host's, the exact address is shown only after payment. Before booking you see a shaded circle of about 500 metres. After payment you receive the exact pin, directions, a gate photo and a note you can forward to a boda or taxi driver. Reminders go out the day before and on the morning of check-in.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kololo safe for a short stay?

Kololo is a diplomatic and upscale district with many gated compounds. No area is risk-free, so ask the host whether the gate is guarded at night, whether parking is inside, and arrange transport with a driver you trust after dark.

Is Kololo close to Entebbe airport?

No. The airport is about 40 km from central Kampala by road, and Kololo is a hill inside the city, so you travel through city traffic at the end. If you only need one night around a flight, Entebbe is nearer.

Can I stay in Kololo for a month?

Yes. For a month or more, a monthly rental is usually better value and gives you a tenancy. See our Kololo rentals page, or ask a host for a long-stay rate in the booking chat.

Is Kololo quiet at night?

Parts are, parts are not. Bars and restaurants have increased noise on the hill. Ask the host about the nearest venue and which side the bedroom faces before you book.
