Updated 3 November 2026 · Land & Property editorial team

Muyenga, also called Tank Hill, is a ridge in Makindye Division about 8 km by road south-east of the city centre, peaking near 1,306 m with views of the city to the north and west and Lake Victoria to the east and south. It suits guests who value a view and a breeze, and who can live with uneven roads.

Is Muyenga a good area to stay?

Yes, if the view is what you are after. Muyenga is one of the highest points in Kampala, and the water tanks of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation on the summit give it the name Tank Hill. Views run over the city to the north and west, and the lake lies to the east and south. For a few nights it is a pleasant place to have breakfast on a balcony.

The trade-off is access. The roads and drainage on the hill are uneven because building was largely unplanned after 1986, so allow time to go up and down, especially in the rains. If you prefer flat, calm streets, compare Bugolobi. For the lake itself, look at Munyonyo.

How do I get to Muyenga from Entebbe airport?

The airport is about 40 km from central Kampala, and Muyenga is about 8 km from the centre on the south-east side. The simplest plan is to arrange a pickup with a driver you know or that the host recommends, and to share the pin from the booking with them. After payment you receive the exact location, directions, and a note to forward to a driver, so you do not have to explain a turning by phone.

We cannot promise a journey time, because it changes with the hour and the day. Ask the host for their usual time at your arrival hour. If you land late, agree the check-in arrangement in advance; the same applies to a gate code or key handover.

What is Muyenga like at night?

The hill is largely residential, and the nearby area of Kabalagala has many restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Muyenga is a landmark for that nightlife, so noise depends on which side of the hill you are on. A flat on the upper streets facing away from Kabalagala is likely to be quieter; one nearer Kabalagala is closer to the music.

Ask the host about the nearest bar and which way the bedroom faces. You can also read more on how to pick between estates on Short Stays in Kampala: Which Area to Book.

What should a host in Muyenga provide?

On a hill, water pressure and storage matter. Before you pay, ask:

  • Is there a water tank, and does it have a pump if the mains pressure drops?
  • Is there backup power for lights, fridge and Wi-Fi?
  • Is the gate staffed, and can a car or minibus reach the door in the rain?
  • Where do boda and taxi drivers drop you, and how far is the walk?

Under our policy a power or water outage of more than 12 hours that the host did not disclose is a serious event, which entitles you to a full refund claim. Read the steps on Short-Stay Cancellation, Refunds and Guest Protection.

What are the alternatives to Muyenga?

If you like the idea of Muyenga but want less climbing, Bugolobi sits just to its north, while Munyonyo is directly on the water and is served by a spur of the Entebbe-Kampala Expressway. Both are described on their own pages: Short Stay in Bugolobi, Kampala: Quiet Residential Base and Short Stay in Munyonyo, Kampala: Lake and Resorts.
