Why choose Munyonyo for a short stay?

Choose it for the water, the space and the route. Munyonyo sits on the lake in Makindye Division, away from the dense central hills. It is a base for people attending events at the lake-side resorts, for families who want a calmer stay, and for anyone who wants an easy road from the airport.

It is not the right base if you need to be in town several times a day. Munyonyo is about 12 km from the city centre, so every trip is a proper drive. If city access matters most, compare Kololo or Muyenga.

Which resorts and venues are in Munyonyo?

The Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort is the best known. It hosted the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting on 23 to 25 November 2007, and it stands next to the Speke Resort and Conference Centre, a venue used for conferences. Guests attending a week-long event may prefer a private apartment nearby to a hotel room.

If you are attending an event, check the dates against your booking. When big conferences run, availability in the area tightens, so book early and read the cancellation policy of the host before you pay.

Is Munyonyo close to the airport?

It is the most convenient Kampala estate for the airport, but it is still a long drive. Entebbe International Airport is about 40 km from central Kampala by road. The Entebbe-Kampala Expressway starts at the airport and runs through Kajjansi, where a spur of about 14 km branches off to Munyonyo. That avoids most city streets. Tolls have been charged since 8 January 2022, and were reported at UGX 5,000 to UGX 18,000 depending on vehicle size. Rates can change, so ask your driver whether the fare includes the toll.

Journey time depends on the hour and traffic on the expressway, so we do not promise one. Ask the host for their usual time at your arrival hour. If you only need a bed for a night around a flight, Entebbe is closer still.

What is lake-side living like, and can I swim?

The lake gives Munyonyo breezes, open skies and sunsets, and the resorts have lake-side dining. Whether you can swim in the water at a particular spot is not something we can verify, and conditions vary along the shore, so do not assume it is safe. Use pools at resorts or follow a local guide, and never swim alone. Ask the host which spots neighbours use and which to avoid.

Ask your host where to get food late in the evening and whether delivery reaches the address. Note that the exact address is shown only after payment, so share the pin with your delivery rider only after you receive it.

What should I ask a Munyonyo host before booking?

• How far is the property from the resort gate and from the main road?
• Is there backup power and a water tank?
• Is the compound gated and staffed at night?
• Can the host arrange a pickup from the airport?
